How to add a directory to PATH permantely


Hi all does anyone know how can i add a directory to PATH permanently.I use for instance i want java_vm in my PATH which is in /usr/lib/SunJava2-1.4.2/jre/bin so i type in a console
Code:
export PATH="$PATH:/usr/lib/SunJava2-1.4.2/jre/bin"
and that work for that type.How about add it permanently?

do you use bash? put that code in your .bashrc file
