How do you access chat rooms with GAIM??

I have mine set up for Yahoo. The messenger part works fine, but when I click on tools>room list>get rooms....the rooms come up, but when I highlight what I want, I can't click/enter into the room??? Why is that? I only get two choices, get rooms & close, I can't join? Thanks

in the menu: Tools > Roomlist

one word of warning, Yahoo chat is serously infested with bots most linking to russian websites with a "blogs.blogopt" link (play-on word to fool people in to thinking blogspot?)

these bots spam the chatrooms so bad that normal conversation is almost impossible to follow, you will be spending most of your time playing "whack a mole" with the ignore button on the bots in the chat-user list...

I appreciate your response, BUT

it does not help me. You told me EXACTLY what I told you I did. Re-read my question.

i dont want to help you enter a yahoo chatroom, yahoo chat sucks, it should be shut down, bots advertising pornography indiscriminately to everyone in the chatroom regardless of age is crazy, Yahoo chat is a ghetto...

I'm sorry, but I will have to agree. I don't want to help you in that either. It's not worth it. I spent years in the yahoo chat room and it was hell. I spent long hours, LATE nights in there, lsoing sleep and a social life, trying to talk with someone, and only getting depressed and angry, and if I found someone to talk with, it never turned out well, and that was repeated daily for a few years.

I remember years back, yahoo had people. It was a little easier to talk with others, but for the past year, and I imagine now, it's practically filled with porn bots, and their advertisements. The few that remain basically talk of adult sitatuations, and other things I won't mention, it'd just be censored anyway.

That's one of the greatest reasons I loved linux, was because it was a break from it. I didn't know how to get in the rooms, didn't even care to bother to know how.
I made a slight mistake in finding out, but only when in there a few times, then gave it up.

Believe me, there is NO reason to go in there. NO reason. I'm sorry. I don't know how to get in there, and can't bring myself to tell someone how to.

There's only porn bots and sick perverted people, and I can't be a dishonest and cold hearted and tell someone how to get in there.
Sorry.

(sorry for the long message, sensitive subject, been through hell in there)

Bots/Yahoo chat

I am trying to find a decent chat program to use. I am bailing on Yahoo. I just need something that is free and where I can get my nux questions answered without ridicule. Yahoo sucks..., big surprise. From what I understand, gaim will work with a host, but you need a host. Any suggestions? I'm going to try icq next just to see what happens, but i'd rather have something with searchable rooms. Thanks, Jason

If your wanting to chat in order to get help for Linux , why not use IRC? Most distros have a IRC channel. irc chat tends to put you in touch with people that know your distro and that are willing to help.

SuSE Linux Forums > Suse Support Irc Channel Now Available
Quote:
We have opened an IRC channel for support with SuSE. You can get help from other users on the IRC channel.
Host: irc.freenode.com
Channel: #sls-support
You can also access this through this link irc://irc.freenode.net/sls-support
This is supported by mIRC and XChat and possibly others.

Plus Google is definitely your friend when it comes to learning Linux.

WHAT A CROCK!!!

If a guy wants to chat in a yahoo room, who are we to say "dont want to help you enter a yahoo chatroom, yahoo chat sucks". If you don't want to help the OP do not respond to this thread. You are not only wasting the OPs time, but fellow readers of this thread. No one has the right to tell someone what they can and can not do with their computers.

Shame.

OP-

I assume you are using Gnome? Or are you using KDE?
I had too many problems configuring Kopete with Yahoo that I ended up running this on VMware. Webcam images would not come through (probably because of my router). Since Yahoo Messenger is geared to a windows environment, all features will not be handled in Linux.

Good Luck.
