how do i know if my system is a 32bit or 64bit system? im asking this because when i install FC4 which is i386(i assume this to be 32bit) it just went to install the OS but when i install SUSE-9.3 which is also an i386 it says "cool computer but you are installing a 32bit into a 64bit system" the thing is when i do install the 32bit suse many services failed to start!!

so rite now not sure if my system is 64bit capable and does suse-9.3 has 64bit version?

system is P4 3.0Ghz with HT support and 1gig ram.

HT is enabled by default.

Processor is intel LGA 755 P4.

any help is much appreciated.

As far as I understand, x64 is based upon the type of processor. FOr example, mine is clearly marked as x64 ... AMD x64 2800+.

I looked up your processor and it appears to be 32-bit (at least I couldn't find anything saying it is 64-bit).

when you start installing SUSE 9.3, it will be automatically recognized whether you have 32 or 64bit proc. At least it was when I installed my first SUSE 9.2 pro.

yup it detected mine as a 64bit system. As i put it in my post "cool computer but you are installing a 32bit into a 64bit system" so you see suse-9.3 detected my system as 64bit but fedora core 4 didn't!!

strange.

anywhere i can look to ensure that mine is 32bit not 64bit and furthermore many services was getting disabled during startup and i have to reinstall multiple times it still failed to start??

Yes it is. You will only get at setup stage a message that you are installing 32 bit system on 64bit computer.
I did it when I first install my SUSE 9.3 pro.
