I wrote a little troubleshooting guide for wireless network. It may help you.
2. I do not use usb nic but the following are some tips I clipped from other threads just in case I would need it in the future
2.1 if there is direct linux support for your usb go for it.
2.2 if there is not support use the XP drivers.
Yast/software manager/search for ndiswrapper and install
Yast/network device/network card/add/
device type: wireless
Module name: ndiswrapper
Input all the info about the wireless network and finish. The best is to configure it through the knetworkmanager
Let the ndiswrapper run with all the available options.
