gui, mouse, network fails after kernel update

I'm running openSuse 10.2 and a couple of days ago I installed a kernel patch via yast/autoupdate. I finally rebooted today and found out the gui, mouse and network are not working. External USB drive is working but really slow. I've got the gui working by running sax2 -r -m 0=vesa but no luck with the mouse & network. Below is a extract of boot.msg The lib/modules2.6.18... directory it refers to is mostly empty. I'm kind of new at this so I don't know if more info is needed.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Try running "depmod -a" as root. Then run "mkinitrd". Then reboot. It seems that the upgrade was interupted. Usually the depmod program is run whenever a kernel is updated or a driver like an nvidia driver is changed.

I checked the lib/modules/2.6.18.8-0.5-default/ and there are a few more files in there now, but the network and mouse are still not working. I've included the new boot.msg file, although I cut some of it out to shorten the length of the post. There is an error message about device-mapper, but I don't know if its relevant.

Thanks

I'm curious whether the "hid" kernel module is loaded. Try "lsmod | grep hid".
What network device do you have?

Also, do you still have your old kernel & its modules? If so, and it is present in the grub menu, you could select that to boot up. If so, but it isn't present in the grub menu, you could modify /boot/grub/menu.lst to boot up using those instead. If this works, you could recreate the /boot/vmlinuz and /boot/initrd symbolic links and the /usr/src/linux link. In other words roll back to using the previous kernel version. I does look like the upgrade was less successful than I had previous thought. It may have bailed at an earlier stage then I thought.

You could try running as root "SuSEconfig", but I doubt that will fix the problem.

I did lsmod|grep hid and nothing showed up, so I left off the 'grep'. There's not much there. This is the whole thing.

The nic is just the onboard nic on an ASUS A8N mb.

Background info:
The machine is multiple boot. There is a window partition and two copies of linux. When I first installed linux, I realized it would only be a matter of time before I got myself in trouble, so I first installed a small maintenance(10 gb) copy and got it working. I've never allowed it to do any updates. (That's the one I'm using now) and then I installed a real working copy for day to day use. From the maint copy, I have full access to the day-to-day copy.

I don't know where the old kernel would be if it was still on the system. I'm trying to recover it from a fairly recent full backup, but that's a slow process. I also don't know what to do with it after I recover the files or how to re-install it. Is it possible that it just needs to have the menu updated?

This seems to be the menu that is displayed during boot, although the new kernel doesn't show up. I managed to get in to yast2 on my day-to-day linux (the one I'm trying to get working again) and this is not the menu that is displayed there. I just rebooted and checked the current kernel version.
From uname -a on normal instance:
Linux linux 2.6.18.8-0.5-default #1 SMP Fri Jun 22 12:17:53 UTC 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

From uname -a on maint instance
Linux linux 2.6.13-15.10-smp #1 SMP Fri May 12 16:11:24 UTC 2006 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Thanks

I think that your problems are due to not having the hid module loaded.
On my SuSE laptop:
Code:
bhid                 58160  0
hid                    43776  1 usbhid
ff_memless             22536  1 usbhid
usbcore               155816  6 usb_storage,usbhid,ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd,wacom
I have a usb mouse so I also use the usbhid module. These kernel modules are also enabled in a SuSE kernel:
CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2=y
CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_ALPS=y
CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_LOGIPS2PP=y
CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_SYNAPTICS=y
CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_LIFEBOOK=y
CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_TRACKPOINT=y

If you have a ps2 mouse, try modprobing both the mouse_ps2 and the hid modules.

I noticed uname said it was still running the old kernel, so I added a menu option to into the boot.msg to make sure it loads the new one. uname -a now says:

linux 2.6.18.8-0.7-default #1 SMP Tue Oct 2 17:21:08 UTC 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

so it looks like the right kernel Both the network and the mouse are working ok now. The only issue left is that the display is incredibly slow. Scrolling in a web browser is sluggish and repositioning windows on the screen is slow. I checked in yast and it says it's using the NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT Card and the monitor is VESA 1280x1024 @60hz which should be ok. The option to activate 3d acceleration is disabled so I can't change it for some reason. I've downloaded some drivers from nvidia, and I'll try to install them tomorrow.

I've re-installed the nvidia drivers successfully and all is well now. The mouse is working properly (including the scroll-wheel) and the display is working normally.

Thanks for your help!
