GTK Themes Not Loading & Causing Problems

OK, I'm running KDE 3.3.2 (installed via RPMs) on SuSE 9.2, with GNOME installed out of the box.

Now, when I load a GTK-using application such as GIMP or aMule or somesuch, I have a horrible looking interface with really basic-looking widgets despite having chosen a different them last time I logged on.

So I go to K-Menu > Utilities > Desktop > GNOME Control Center

Upon loading this, I click the "Themes" icon. As the theme settings window opens, before I even set any settings, my preferred GTK theme suddenly appears on GIMP, aMule, and any other GTK-using app I might have open at the time. It's almost as if my preferred theme is not loaded until I have opened the theme settings dialog, at which point it "remembers" what it is meant to be doing and loads the proper theme.

First question: how do I make the theme in question load at startup without having to go through this rigmarole?

Now, even weirder, when this theme loads- my fonts screw up. Half a dozen KDE apps start displaying much smaller fonts, even though the settings for KDE fonts in the KDE Control Center are still the same. It's as if my default size 10 font suddenly shrinks in half a dozen applications.

So second question: why on earth is this happening, and how do I stop it?

And I guess kind of a third question... I have the gtk-qt engine installed. How do I use that?

Much grateful for any answers or help!

Mogh :)

I am having the same problem. I have tried using gtk-qt-engine, but it has no effect. Is anyone else having this problem with SuSE 9.2 and KDE 3.3.2?

Just want to say- installing KDE 3.4 Beta 2 has improved this, but the problem remains...

I was able to fix the issue by installing guru's gtk-qt rpm from his site. After that I was able to apply my QT theme to gtk programs with no problem. Do not start Gnome control center, because it remains running (along with xscreensaver and a bunch of other stuff).

You should then be able to open Control Center and apply any theme you want to GTK apps.
