I just installed Suse 10.1 and after running fine for a few days, Grub 1.5 now appears to be stuck in restart mode and always boots to Windows without loading the selection screen, so I cannot get into Linux anymore. If I go into recovery mode from the DVD and try to reinstall GRUB to /dev/hda it says 'cannot create directory, read only file system'. Help please?!?!
There are two recovery modes on the install disks. Boot from either the DVD or CD 1 of the 5 CD set.
1. The menu should have a "Rescue Mode" entry after the various "Installation" entries. This will load a kernel and take you to a command line log-in. The log-in is "root", with no password.
2. The second method is to start the installation, and on the page after the License Agreement, where you can select "New Installation" or "Upgrade", choose "Other" near the bottom right, and then "Repair installed System". This will take you to another menu, which has 3 options, "Automatic Repair", "Customised Repair", or "Expert Tools".
