GRUB error 18.... not a BIOS problem

Ok, I've been running my server on Suse 9.3 for a little over a year now with very little problems. I recently came home to find that it was fozen (over heated I belive, I forgot to turn the AC on). Had to hard boot it, and it came up with this:

GRUB Loading stage1.5.

GRUB Loading, please wait...
error 18

Now i've spent 4 hours searching for an answer, but everything seems to point to it being a BIOS limitation, which simply does not make any sense since it's ran for a year without any problems. After the error occurs, system is unresponsive to any commands other than alt+ctrl+del

Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Why would the BIOS not be possibly susceptable to a (over)heating problem ???.

Boot a liveCD like Knoppix and see what it can see - generally Linux ignores the BIOS once booted.
If the rest of the hardware looks o.k. I'd be looking to re-flash the BIOS.

hmm i had that trouble before (not on suse but on slakware)

my advice would be recreate your MBR

hopefully you can do this with a live cd such as knopix or slax

i used to get error 18, or 15, this was caused by the new install failing to overwirlte the MBR and the grub config from a previous distro
