GPRS over SuSE 9.3 Professional. A Problem !!!

Dear Friends, though Linux is my Favorite OS yet it makes me disappointed seldom and when it makes disappointed it makes greatly. But now i think it is stupid to disappoint, since you are there for my help.

I remember , with the help of one of you friends, i became able to access internet through GPRS on my SuSE 9.2 Professional almost 7 months past. GPRS still runs great on 9.2 Professional.

But a few days back i installed SuSE 9.3 Professional and some thing wrong happens when i try to access GPRS.

i send you all the details as following....

1. I have GPRS enabled Cellphone, Sony Ericsson P -800.

2. My " /etc/wvdial.conf " contents are as below

****************************************************
[Modem0]
Modem = /dev/rfcomm0
Baud = 115200
SetVolume = 0
Dial Command = ATDT
Init1 = ATZ
Init3 = ATM0
FlowControl = None
[Dialer GPRS]
Username = user
Password = user
Phone = ATD*99***1#
Stupid Mode = 1
Inherits = Modem0

************************************

Let me tell you that these lines are edited/added manually by me. AND THIS CONFIGURATION WORKS ABSOLUTELY FINE WITH SuSE 9.2 Professional.

2. I execute the following Commands on Terminal, to pair and to make my p- 800 Cell to dial the GPRS company's Phone No.

commanda are as follows.....

1st. hcitool scan

2nd. sdptool search DUN

3rd. rfcomm bind 0 <cellphone'sADDRESS> <rfcommchannel>

For Example : - rfcomm bind 0 0 00:0A9:5F:11:A7 3

4th. wvdial GPRS.

As i give the " wvdial GPRS " command in 9.3, the following error is displayed in Terminal.

************************************************************************

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0
--> Cannot open /dev/rfcomm0: Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Cannot open /dev/rfcomm0: Input/output error
--> Cannot open /dev/rfcomm0: Cannot get information for serial port.

*************************************************************************
It is important to mention here that in 9.2 Professional, as i give " wvdial GPRS " command, System starts initialising the GPRS connection and dial the Phone No. mentioned in " /etc/wvdial.conf ". After Getting DNS Server Addresses , IT CONNECTS to my GPRS Provider.

Well, friends, i am really disappointed since i purchased very expensive 9.3 Professional primarily for GPRS. But GPRS does not start on it. I have no alternate of It. And i need it 24 hours a day. But i don't want to miss SuSE 9.3 Professional too. Since " I AM ADDICT TO LINUX "

I hope for you kind help at the earliest like all last all times. i will be highly grateful to you.

Well, considering that it was several months ago since your post, you probably have it working perfectly by now. But on the off chance that you haven't, my hunch would be that one of the following are at fault...
  • Missing software
  • Incorrect permissions (are you a member of the correct group ?)
Running 'tail -f /var/log/messages' in a second terminal as you attempt to open the gprs connection might be useful, as would just checking that you can communicate with it over minicom or gtkterm.

Good luck, anyway !

Hi,

This is a problem of wvdial.

You can get rid of it by downloading the latest versions of wvdial (1.54.0) and wvstreams (4.0.2).
In wvstreams, edit streams/wvmodem.cc and take out the #ifdefed stuff after #if HAVE_LINUX_SERIAL_H.

Then configure (--without-qt --without-ogg), make, install, and make wvdial.

This worked for my gprs with SE Z600.
