gnome doesn't autoload after installing drivers for Nvidia Geforce MX 440 (Suse 9.3)
I downloaded drivers that where said to be for Suse 8.1 and earlier. the RPM installation of the kernel and then GL went ok... but when i restarted the computer Gnome didnt show up... instead there is a simple login screen, and when i log in its wery ugly and the mouse pointer looks like an X, and there is no icons or anything.
I dont want to install Suse over again, is there anything i can do to make it work?? |
from a command line run xf86config and choose your old driver for the video card.
make sure you copy (if necessary) the final config file it creates to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. good luck. |
the ugly desktop doesnt show up anymore, instead it is some kind of console with a green graphic background, but i cant start "startx"
I get this (EE) lines when runing "startx": (EE) VGA(0): Given depth (16) is not supported by this driver. (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. i have tried "VGA compatible" driver, with no luck and when i try to start gnome (writeing gnome and then enter) i got: xsetroot: unable to open display '' (gnome-session:6107): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: |
Actiually i solved my problem...
to you all out there with the same problem... i did this: 1. logged in as root in the console 2. Typed YaST2 and in the Hardware i chosed "Graphic and monitor" (then alt+p to reprobe the graphic card) 3. also in YaST2 went Desktop->Display Manager and chosed gnm as display. reboot I hope it works out for you all. ** got a message that X Server wasnt configured properly for display ** 4. logg in as root 5. type init 3 to go to level 3 mode (dont ask me why, you just need to do this) 6. type SaX2 and the xserver program will detect the probed graphic driver. reboot |
