Frequent Firefox Crashes
 

Specification : OpenSuse 10.2, Kernel-2.6.18.8, KDE-3.5.7, QT-3.3.8 on i686.

Since I had to re-install OpenSuse 10.2 I am facing this regular crashing of Firefox. Initially I was not able to understand the reason of crash but later by reading someone's post I got the idea of running firefox from prompt and found the error message :

"/usr/lib/firefox/firefox-bin: symbol lookup error: /opt/gnome/lib/mozilla/plugins/libswfdecmozilla.so: undefined symbol: swfdec_gtk_player_new"

I tried by reinstalling Swf libraries but that didn't help. I have started using Linux for few months now so I still need help at basic level.:)

Please help.

I've never used SuSE, so this might not be any help at all, but what is libswf? Is it some form of open source Flash decoder, possibly related to gnash? If so, you may want to try switching to the closed source Adobe Flash player. You'd have to search out the best way to do that under SuSE, as it may be possible through the package management system. Alternatively head to adobe.com and follow the download links.

I am also not really aware about the details of libswf but I guess it is a flash decoder. I have installed everything via YAST (Package management system of OpenSuSE). I remember while I was installing OpenSuSE due to reasons I am not aware there was some dependency errors.

The problem is solved now. I am reproducing the steps I did. It's somewhat strange that this worked but it's what that I did.

1. I removed Firefox through YUM, because YAST was asking dependency questions one after another.
2. Then I reinstalled firefox through YAST.

Now everything is working. No crashes.

Had the same problems and simply took out libswf and related files. Everything seems to work now _including_ flash! What am I missing?
