Free disk space in '/' getting smaller and smaller.
Every time after security or any update of packages, the free space in '/' partition is getting smaller and smaller. Initially, right after installation, it was about 1GB but now only about 200MBs are left.
Why ? Does anyone have an idea ?
Thanks in advance.

There is an option to remove packages after the update in the YOU module. If you don't tick it, all packages will be stored somewhere in /var/lib/YaST2/you. You can safely delete them, since they are not needed anymore.

Thanks for reply but it seems there is another reason.
abisko00, thanks for your reply.
I checked /var/lib/YaST2 directory and found that it does not take up much space. The total size of /var is only 160 MB.
So it cannot explain disappearance of about 1 GB of free space. Now I have only 91 MBs are left in '/' partition. This is very weird.
I checked every directory but I don't have a clue which one contains.
Anybody has any idea what causes this free space disappearance ?
Thanks in advance.

It's hard to answer your question without having more info, specifically, how is your drive partitioned? Do you just have a "/" partition, or have you defined separate partitions for /home, /usr, etc? Please post the results from running
Note that's a lowercase "L". Knowing that will be an important clue

If you deleted any files in that directory, they may be in the Trash. You will need to start a session as root to empty the trash can. I tried puppy with a live CD and it stored a copy of Puppy in the root directory. I deleted the file in a root terminal session thinking it was now gone. Yast always told me that the root space was used. Finally I got the idea to look in the roots trash folder and there it was.

J.W. and fragos,
Thanks for your reply but not much help yet.
First following is the result of 'fdisk -l'. HDD is a SCSI disk.
Disk /dev/sda: 36.4 GB, 36401479680 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4425 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 447 3590496 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 448 4425 31953285 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda5 448 894 3590496 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 895 1086 1542208+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda7 1087 1278 1542208+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda8 1279 4425 25278246 83 Linux
Following is the result of 'df'
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 3534096 3248284 106288 97% /
tmpfs 778080 12 778068 1% /dev/shm
/dev/sda8 24881304 2874148 20743244 13% /home
/dev/sda7 1517920 36956 1403856 3% /tmp
/dev/sda5 3534096 2830304 524268 85% /usr/local
There is another IDE HDD for windows but it is not mounted.
Following fragos reply I checked the trash bin of root but it is empty.
Usually I don't leave files in the trash bin. I just delete them.
I don't think partition structure can help much to answer my original question.
