Firewall problem browsing Windows network

Is there anyway to keep firewall running while browsing a Windows network from Linux.

I don't have any probs accessing Linux shares (SAMBA) from a Windows box with a firewall enabled but if I want to browse the Windows network from the Linux boxes I need to temporarily disable the firewall.

Any way round this -- I do want to keep the firewall running and it's messy running a start and stop firewall before browsing a Windows network

(Not a SUSE 10.0 specific problem --I've had this for as long as I can remember but these days it's much more important to keep systems protected as far as possible now things like always on Internet connections etc are commonly used.

Cheers

You can do it if you modify your firewall setup to allow for it. Assuming you're using iptables for the firewall do "iptables -L" to see what rules it has. You likely need to open up certain ports for the browsing. You'd need to figure out which ones.

One way to see what ports you're accessing is to do an "lsof i" in another window while you're doing the browsing (with the firewall off) to see what ports you're hitting.
