Finding network cards compatible with SuSE 9.2
I've been having no end of trouble getting SuSE 9.1 and now 9.2 to play nicely with my Broadcom network card. I thought I'd check SuSE's web site to see what network cards I could be certain will work. I was surprised to find a list comprised of a single brand, SysKonnect. (I used the search tool SuSE provides here:
http://hardwaredb.suse.de/index.php?LANG=en_UK Is this really the only brand of network cards guaranteed to work with SuSE? Or is there somewhere I might find a slightly longer list? |
If your card works in the current kernel, and it isn't deprecated in new and upcoming kernels, you should be fine with what you have right now
Suse's HCL is just the stuff they've tested in a lab, which probably consists of free hardware donated by that manufacturer in the hopes that you buy there junk soley on their websites recommendation. (A tip learned from M$) |
I use SMC EZ cards - always have, always will...... they have been auto detected by suse since 7.0

That's the problem, musicman, my Broadcom card is flakey and hasn't yet worked for me without serious issues in 9.1 or 9.2.
Perhaps I'll take monroetech's advice and try an SMC card. I can easily get the SMC1244TX EZ Card 10/100 Full Duplex PCI Network Adapter. If anyone else has further input, I'm open to hear it. |
Use the "Netsemi" driver and buy a netgear FA311 from any major electronics store (Bestbuy, staples, etc.) It will work and its probably only $15

My SUSE 9.2 install worked perfectly with netgear fa311 but not the ma111 netgear usb wireless.
