e1505/6400 Inspiron - Multimedia Buttons

I am running suse 10.1 on a e1505 dell inspiron laptop. most things are working fine with the exceptions of the multimedia buttons on the front and some of the function buttons.

suspend, wireless up/down seem to work on the function buttons. function buttons for volume do not work.

i am running KDE as a desktop manager.

so this really didnt bother me that much until i was playing with the ubuntu live cd and it auto-detected everything, including the buttons on the front. i am pretty sure it was using GNOME.

is this a gnome vs kde thing or does ubuntu have some newer drivers for the dell?

i want to keep suse because it is easier to do some other things that i care about mroe than my volume buttons. (volume is working on the KDE control panel)

i installed the i8k package, downloaded the tarball, unzipped it, and ran make

when i try to run i8kbuttons it gives me the following error:

unable to open i8k proc file: /proc/i8k

any ideas?

thanks
