Dovecot setup problems on SuSE 9.2

I'm hoping someone can help me with my setup of Dovecot. I'm trying to set it up as a pop3 server and when I start it I don't get any logs (it's supposed to produce a log in /var/log but it doesn't, it might produce one somewhere else but I can't find it). I can not telnet into port 110 it does not respond.

I'm not sure what my area troubleshooting next. If anyone has experience I would appreciate at least a direction to go.

Here's a help page on the config file. Looks like you can set the log file in this file.
