Does anybody still use MPlayer?
 

Does anybody still use MPlayer? If no, then what are you using? If yes, then how do you get it to work with SUSE 10.1?

For me, MPlayer still beats everything.

Try Guru's SMART package manager (comes with everything preconfigured and has an easy to use GUI):

Thanks. That was going to be my next question. I have seen recently stuff about SMART and was going to give it a try. Now how do I get SMART on the PC. I guess, I will read some other posts on the subject.

Download these packages in your home map:

Open a terminal/konsole and type(all as root):
rpm -Uvh smart-0.42-12.guru.suse101.i686.rpm smart-gui-0.42-12.guru.suse101.i686.rpm
(if you get an error, post back)
smart update
smart upgrade



****Installing mplayer****

Type as root:
smart install mplayer
Or start the SMART GUI (type smart-gui) and click on whatever you want.




****Installing video codecs (all of them)****

If Firefox downloaded it on your desktop, drag and drop it in your user's home map.

Become root (su)

mkdir /usr/local/lib/codecs/
mkdir /usr/lib/win32

tar xvfj all-20060611.tar.bz2
cp ./all-20060611/* /usr/local/lib/codecs/
cp ./all-20060611/* /usr/lib/win32/

chmod 755 /usr/local/lib/codecs/*
chmod 755 /usr/lib/win32/*

I prefer kaffeine (Xine based). Mplayer is ok but since I use KDE, kaffeine integrates well with the rest of the desktop and plays everything that mplayer can play if you have the right codecs installed.

It's the small stuff that makes MPlayer so good (and the extras like mencoder that come with it). I'm no fan of its GUI though, Xine has indeed more graphical/futured/bloated GUIs like Kaffeine and amarok-xine(most of them will load half KDE and other needless bloat though). It's much more functional from the command line (using ~/.mplayer/config). Apart from that it also has a lot more functions than anything else. The video quality is also better than with the xine based ones(or VLC). I like Xine for its GUI players, but xine-lib itself is really not as advanced as mplayer.

PS: For full KDE integration, you could also use kmplayer as a front for both mplayer and xine.

I found that some players would not play my (Paid for dvds). MPlayer does without problem.

They play fine for my using libdvdcss on Gentoo and Suse. There is an rpm, deb and source package available from the videolan website.

does anybody still use mplayer
 

I am a total newbie and I can not yet get some xine front ends to work but thanks to your help I got smart working and the libdvdcss installed. Got a long way to go to get it all right.

Jen, thanks for everything. Your instructions where perfect. I did not have time during the end of the week. Work had me busy and I was too tired to even turn on my PCs at home.

For the rest of the other posts...
I did see the thread on Xine but I don't like it. I have used it in the past but mplayer has a better interface.

The only thing I do not have fixed is the plugin for firefox with mplayer. I am hopping that when I did the upgrade it fixed it. If not, I may be posting soon.
