I tried to open a "wmv" file that a friend sent to me but I got an error message from Totem saying:
"You do not have a decoder installed to handle this file.
"You might need to install the necessary plugins".
What are the "necessary plugins", where are they, and how do I install them?
I googled around and found a few other people having the same problem but no clear answer. I'm really new to Linux and need some real step-by-step instructions. Thanks.
Very informative article but it didn't work. Taught me a lot though.
I don't think i mentioned that I'm using SLED 10 and I'm not sure if this article pertains to that. It just kept mentioning SUSE 10 and 10.1. I think these are different OS's. Almost everything that he was adding to the basic OS already exists in SLED - except the ability to play DVD's. I did manage to download and install libdvdcss2-1.2.9-1.i386.rpm - which I thought was going to be the key move - but it didn't work (ps: how would i know for sure if i really have this installed properly?). Can anybody help?
SLED 10 is based on Suse 10.1. Some people have said that Suse 10.1 packages will work on SLED 10 but I have not tried this. Installing libdvdcss should probably have resolved your problem, but if it hasn't, you may need to uninstall the Suse Xine packages and install ones that are not crippled. You can use the instructions for Suse 10.1 in the link above and setup the packman mirror. You can then use YAST to install the uncrippled multimedia packages you need.
