Cpu usage while copying files from DVD
Hello everybody, I recently installed 9.1 suse, and I must say im very amazed by this distro, as Mandrake 10.1 pretyt much disappointed me.
What Im experiencing right now is this : Im copying my mp3s back to my drive ( which i formatted in reiserfs in order to get rid of ntfs ) and I see that it takes too long to copy the files ( thats the first issue ) and also that the cpu usage is very high resulting in an unstable environment with even the mouse lagging ( and u all know this is very annoying ). I have no clue why that happens and how to deal with it, when I used in Mandrake I didnt experience this and Im a bit lost on this one. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have some 120gb in dvds that need to be back on the drive and I dont want it to take ages and lot of patience to get it done. Thanks a lot in advance :) |
SuSE disables DMA (dynamic memory access) on CD and DVD drives by default, because it can cause crashes and other problems on some badly-behaved drives.
Without DMA, the CPU has to read and write every byte from the drive, one at a time, which would account for both the slow-down you are noticing and the longer time taken to copy the files. You should be able to turn DMA on for the drive using YaST. |
Thanks a lot pal, I just did that and it all runs much faster!! Im copying the files now and no lag at all!! :)
yaay that was great, off to search for the other problems I have now to find some good solutions :p Cheers |
