Convert .wmv to .mpeg
 

Can someone recommend a .wmv to .mpeg converter for SUSE 9.3 that DOESN'T need Mplayer? Perhaps one based on the xine libs.

I've used "transcode" and "mencoder" in the past to convert between different video formats, not sure if either required mPlayer though...

Take a look at ffmpeg. It manages to convert most video I've thrown at it including video with wmv codecs.

Thanks everyone. I chose ffmpeg mainly because most of the nine associated files were on the packman web site.

Attempts to convert .wmv files to .mpeg files using "ffmpeg" produce either severe degradation or if using the "- sameq" option MUCH larger files. Is this normal? I am trying to edit/splice various format family video files. I chose to convert everything to .mpeg in order to save disk space, and to be able to use "avidemux2". Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Sorry to hear ffmpeg isn't working for you. I mostly use it to convert avi but have converted wmv1 and wmv2. Have noticed some conversions have come out 'blocky'(my best technical term).
Have you tried altering the frame rate or bitrate, or trying 2 passes?
Maybe if you describe your video problem a little more clearly one of the video wizards will have an answer. Sorry I can't be more help :(
