hey all,
just installed suse 10 and most things work out of the box. The sound on the desktop works fine, yet when i start playing an audio cd, it seems to be working but theres no sound from the speakers. What could be the problem?

Did you play with the different mixer settings? Maybe you just need to pull-up the slider for CD input.

Yeah, i think i've tried all possible settings for the mixer but that wont help. Read somewhere that i should delete all the soundpackages and re-install them with an additional server address. Gona report on that if i succeed.
Another problem is that the laptop always hangs, when i try to reboot. It has done this from the installation on. Does anyone know how to fix that.
BTW: Suspend to ram works out of the box

Yay, i solved the reboot problem, added reboot=b to the kernle line in Grub's menu.lst but no idea about the sound. It seems as if all system sounds are working fine, except when i play an audio cd. Also, when i try to configfure the AC97 it gives me an io error and says that only automatic detection is possible.
It seems as if there are quite a few people that have problems with sound in suse 10
Who can help????

If it wasn't a laptop, I would say that the CD drive is not connected to the soundcard. Some software uses this direct connection (as KsCD for example). But the laptop should have this connection. Have you tried to play the CD through some other software (xmms, xine, amarok)?

Just to say I'm having exactly the same AC97 sound card problem with newly installed Suse 10. Sound is fine for everything but audio cd. CD volume is turned up, but KsCD, XMMS, amarok, all play CDs in total silence.

Attempts to play a CD seem to provoke messages like this is the system log:
Nov 19 18:25:57 mike kernel: hdc: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x01)
....
Nov 19 18:33:42 mike kernel: hdd: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x01)

I've exactly the same problem on my Toshiba laptop with AC97 sound system.
Strange enough the system sounds (e.g. when starting) play correctly.
When I try "Control Panel | Sounds & Multimedia | Sound System" and them "Test Sound" it crashes (artsd crashed and caused SIGSEVV).
Does anyone has an idea how to solve this ?
