I recently installed SUSE LINUX 9.3, and I am very new to the OS. Everything went just right in the installation except for my inability to connect to the internet. My network card shows up as being recognized. I connect to the internet through a Netgear Router(RP614v2), and my router connects to the internet through a Westell Wirespeed DSL modem. (Another interesting thing I might note is that the indicator light for my computer on my router shows up as orange while all of the other indicator lights for my other computers show up as green.) I appreciate any help I can get.

Why pppd for NIC and router? Am I missing something? Setup your eth0 through DHCP. Or if a static IP, be sure to set your /etc/resolv.conf with your ISP nameserver.

Okay, I checked the user controlled box in Yast, which allowed me to select the interface as eth0. Now, the icon for KInternet in the bottom right looks different as if its connected somehow, but I am still unable to get onto the internet, and my router isn't detecting my computer either. Also, when I clicked on "check connection" in KInternet, it tells me that the default gateway is okay but the name server fails and sometimes it shows up as saying that the name server is okay and it shows the ip for my dsl modem, but the internet still wont work. Would this have to do with how I have the card configured in Yast? What should I do?

See if you can ping the router/default gateway... which you are saying is okay, but ping it to be sure. Then;
ping 64.179.4.149
host 64.179.4.149
If that's ok, you'll need to set the nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf

I pinged my router and it turned back a 100% loss result. I pinged my DSL modem and it turned back a 100% success. Now, sometimes it tells me (in "check connection") that the server is ok and somehow it was able to retrieve the ip for my DSL modem. I try the internet and the homepage doesn't work. I try the ip of my router to get to my router site and it gives me an error message that says "page contains no data". But, when I try to go to my DSL modem site by typing in its ip, it is able to somehow load the title bar of my DSL modem site but it doesnt load the site at all. What should I do?

Go to your router's web based menus and make sure every setting is correct. Also remind yourself of settings on it that you will need for Yast. For example, my playstation is x.x.x.102 and I would need to know that in the setup of the internet connections on the ps/2. Then, I would go through the card's setup in Yast.

Your router should be a DHCP server for your computer.

I understand your setup to be:

|----telephone line from wall----dsl modem----router---/ ---------
The computer that does work could have a static ip set in the DHCP server of the router... and because the new computer doesn't and there aren't any numbers to assign free it just doesn't work.

It is also possible that you didn't set your username and password right in the installation and your ISP won't let you on. That is correctable in Yast. This is less likely because you have problems internally too.

I think my problem might be that I don't have any TCP/IP protocals installed on my computer, which is required by my router. How do I find out if I have any and if I don't, how do I install them? Also, my router is a DHCP server by default.

nah. They are installed. Have you gone through the web based settings on the router? How about the network card config in yast? Is everything set okay?
