Can't view pdf links in FF with Suse 10
 

I've asked all over so I thought I'd try here.

First time Suse user, long time Linux user (Debian, mostly).

I did install of the new 10 product. When I click on a .pdf link I get a blank screen. I've checked the links for nppdf.so, I've re-installed acroread 7.0 as well as FF 1.07. I've run the Adobe 'install script' and I've looked at permissions and file associations.

Somewhere there is a simple answer and it has to be unrelated to FF or nppdf.so. There is something else blocking the loading of acroread ... and I know it does not load as it does not show up in ps -aux. I DO know the pdf file is downloaded to the browser as I can do a 'page source' and see the pdf 'gibberish' coding.

I don't know what 'triggers' the plugin to 'jump in' and load its 'parent' display program, but it ain't happen' :-) Now, why is that? Must be a logical reason. (I checked permissions and file associations.... although FF is not a KDE app so it wouldn't care.) I have exact same settings in FF on Suse as I do on Debian. No joy here... and it is driving me nuts trying to figure it out. (mpg video does not work either... but flash works fine.)

I MUST have Adobe Reader 7.0 as I need the ability to fill in pdf forms (like the IRS forms) and only acroread has this function... other readers don't.

Anyone have any ideas?

I had a similar problem, too. However, after I ran the install script for the browser plugin again, everything worked fine. The script complained about previously installed plugins, so I told it to overwrite the existing files.

The script is located in /usr/X11R6/lib/Acrobat7/Browser/ on my system.

I had to run it twice (as root) and then delete the plugninreg.dat file and then do about:plugins (to create a new .dat) and finally pdf files worked. What a major PITA trying to figure this all out was.

Of course, mpg and and wmv video don't work nor does streaming audio (shoutcast). Didn't anyone test Suse 10 before it was released? How come my debian derivatives (Kanotix as well as Ubuntu) have all the multimedia stuff working right out of the box? Someone at Suse needs to find that answer, IMO.
