Beryl with openSUSE 10.2 on Dell E1505 Laptop

I have a Dell E1505 laptop with openSUSE 10.2 installed. Everything works great except I can't get Beryl(or Compiz for that matter) to work. It seems to install fine and I can even get the beryl-manager to load. When I choose to load beryl as my window theme, it will not complete the task and I have to switch back to KDE window manager.

gl gears works great as a test.

My video driver is an ATI X1400. I'm using xorg 7.2RC2 that installed with openSUSE 10.2.

Can anyone point me to a How-to specific to this or give me advice on how to solve this problem?

After having not used Linux for a number of years, I'm amazed at how complete a desktop alternative it is. I can do everything and more than I did on Windoze. It's taken a little time to configure, but it's been worth it.

Thanks in advance. The help is greatly appreciated.

http://en.opensuse.org/Beryl a place to start.

i use Nvidia so i'm not totally conversant with Ati problems. What i do know of is for Ati (newer cards like yours) you must use Xgl, make sure its installed. to use xgl go to yast-system- etc/sysconfig editor and find the window manager part (a choice of Xorg or Xgl) select xgl. the make sure you have tansparency disabled in your 'Desktop config-personal preferances'

also here http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Main_Page for ati and suse

your gonna love it. At this point its not as easy as it should be to get it going (took me a couple of days to find what i needed) but sooo worth it.

Thanks Osbie!

I too live in the Great Cultural Wasteland. Good to see other Angelenos here.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Osbie, it works great now!

I didn't have the xgl server on.

This is the coolest thing ever. Only one problem: Google Earth doesn't work any longer.

Any explanation?

Yeah. Certain OpenGL apps like 3d games dont mix well with it yet. just go too beyrl manager and switch to Kwin (turn off Beryl) should do it.

And congrats! Make sure to play with the settings to find what you like. There are so many. One of my faves, along with the 3d cube, is app chooser(?) (mouse to upper right corner) this setting drove me crazy as every time i went to close an ap i got that instead. so i changed it to lower left. Anyway, lots to explore. Have fun!

I guess ATI is different enough from Nvidia that even a fresh install of GEarth won't work.Earthquakes

Everything else works great. Do you think it could be that I'm using Xorg 7.2RC2 as opposed to the final release? I'm 32-bit also.

Changing to KWin didn't help either.
