before install loads kernal then blank screen...

i downloaded SuSE 10.2 dvd for i386. i burned it with toast 7 off of a macbook. when i put the disc in the tray of my compaq desktop it loads the welcome screen and goes right to the install menu. give you all the options about apci and whatever. it says that it is going to install from dvd, when i click install, a window pops up saying: loading kernal...gets to 100%. but then it goes to a blank screen, and eventually the disc stop spinning in the drive...

so how do i fix this? any help is appreciated.

Could be several things - have you tried the no acpi/no apic/safe mode installs? If they don't work, try pressing f3 and changing it to text mode.

One more thing - I've had a couple of machines where updating the motherboard's BIOS was all that was needed. Check you have the latest version.

i tried acpi disabled and i've tried a handful of commands. when i tried vga=normal i got text mode, but it stoped, and nothing happened when i hit any keys on my keyboard. a friend of mine actually tole me about kubuntu, i installed it this morning, seems to be running fine, but i would like linux instead...

Check what version your bios is. Go on the motherboard manufacturer's site, see if there is an update.

kubuntu is linux Updating the BIOS is a big drastic step and probably totally useless.
This ia more likely a screen problem and is common lately with laptop and lcd screens. The xorg.config file isnt right.
So if you feel the urge try fiddling with that or copy ubuntu's but if your a newby stick with ubuntu for a good while first

Hello All,

Just wanted to post a reply to this message since I was having this same problem and tried all of the suggestions that I could find and none of them worked for me. I continued to get the blank screen after selecting any of the installation options.

I finally went into text installation mode and it also hung, but I was able to write down the point at which it hung. The last message was "NET: Registered protocol family 2." I googled this and found a bug report on the OpenSuse website which provided a work around. The work around is to simply type "maxcpus=0" as a boot option. This worked for me simply using the Installation option. I am assuming that some may have to select one of the other options and adding this to the boot options.

Link to the bug report: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-b.../msg02149.html

By the way, I went into the bug report and it states the issue is resolved; however, the work around worked for me!

Hope this saves someone some time!!

David
