basic steps for upgrading from 9.1 - 10.0?
 

Hi folks,

In some ways I'm a newbie, in some ways I'm not. In any case, I have an old HP box with an IDE drive that USED to run RH... about a year or so ago I rebuilt it and put SuSE Linux 9.1 on it. I've been keeping it updated and all as long as I've be able to in the 9.1 distro.

Well... now that 10.0 is out I can no longer grab updates.

So... I have a question: What steps does one take to upgrade a production 9.1 box to 10.0? I've been googling around but so far not found anything..

Any responses would be greatly appreciated!

Backup important data.
Make a fresh install then.

Welcome to LQ. Assuming that /home is on a separate partition, you could simply install v10.0, using your existing partitions. (Just don't reformat /home, or you'd lose your personal data.) Given the number of packages in any distro, a clean install at least for me is a whole lot easier than trying to manage an upgrade. In brief, I have found that by keeping /home as is, and installing the new distro "around" it makes things pretty easy. Note also that as long as you kept the same filesystem (ext3, reiser, and so forth) you could also use this approach to switch from one distro to another.

As always, anytime you are performing any major work on your system you should backup any important files. Good luck with it
