ati radeon x800 pro driver install problems

Heya guys, I'm a noob at installing drivers, and from what i can see from the forum ati driver install is like the hardest thing in the whole world for linux (great hardware, terrible driver and support ) Anyways, I figured I would give you the specs of my box, and tell you my problem, and maybe someone out there has been in my shoes and knows how to get out of this damn hole.

I have a AMD 64 bit processor with suse 9.2 freshly installed with the 64bit ftp dvd.
No other hardware problems or complaints (cept the font dpi is kinda big if someone knows how to fix that let me know) except i have no 3d/ogl support for my radeon x800 pro. I just recently switched from Micro$oft over to suse because i like its stability and well, everything windows doesnt have. But the big thing is, I CANT PLAY ANY GAMES!

So I went to the ati website and downloaded the proprietary drivers for x.org (i think thats what i needed) and installed the rpm with YaST. That was a big mistake, I rebooted and i was stuck in the black terminal and kde or gnome wouldnt load up. So i reinstalled hoping that this time I can be more successfull.

So if ANYONE knows how I can get my 3d/opengl acceleration up and running i would be sooo happy. I'd hate to give up on linux I love it so much already I just want it to work to its full capability

(I'm a big noob, so i dont know anything about compiling source or kernels so please dumb it down as much as you can.)

Thanks!

md

Maybe my info is outdated, but to my knowledge did ATI not offer any 64bit 3D driver. The solution may be to install the 32bit version (of the driver, or if you are unlucky, of SuSE).

EDIT: try to google for 'ati 3d 64bit linux'. I found this and other: http://www.powernotebooks.com/forum/...pic.php?p=7488

Hi,

Go to the main Suse site, and in the search box type in fglrx. You should then see some stuff about updated drivers for ATI for 9.2. They have a version of the 3d drivers for 64bit processors. You need to follow the instructions to the T while installing it or it wont work, then ur screwed

To make sure you have 3d working after you install it try typing in console... glxinfo and you should get something like a bunch of driver information or just a little bit of info saying that it is an ATI card blah blah. If direct rendering isnt listed there then try in console... glxinfo |grep "direct render" if it says direct rendering yes, then you should be good to go.
