Great instructions. A question about these things from your initial post. How do you make sure you don't use agpgart or does fglrxconfig handle that? Same thing for multisampling and AA... (what is that?).

One more question, My ATI card is in a laptop, will this allow display switching to work?

Don't worry, that stuff comes all in fglrxconfig.

I followed the instructions and have at least managed to not trash my system. My problem is that agpgart still seems to be running. lsmod gives the following:

So, the fglrx module appears to be loaded but so, apparantly is agpgart. One other thing, when running fglrxconfig it didn't seem to be able to identify my card even though it is listed as supported in the readme, yet bootup messages show agpgart identifying my card.

How do I stop agpgart (yes, I asked not to use it in fglrxconfig) from loading, or should I? Is it or could it be causing problems? I suspect yes since I have not been able to do any dual screen stuff.

ok... this is my 10th time at least trying to install these stupid ATI drivers... and everytime I have the same problem...

btw, this is a fresh install, with all updates installed.. and all sources installed...
actually, i don't think there is a problem with the install, that part seems to go as smooth as butter, but after the install when I try to run X (with the command startx) I always get the same thing... NOTHING!

it starts X, my monitor clicks and after about 3-4 seconds my monitor tells me I have no signal... just as it would if I were to power off my computer, but leave my monitor on.

Now I believe it's either its out of sync or something like that... BUT.... I don't see why, because even @ super low graphic settings I does the same... and my monitor is a 21" IBM which can handle very decent resolutions, so I'm sure it shouldn't be going out of sync like that.

Anyone had this problem before? It's really annoying that I see so many people having success with this install, yet everytime I try it I always end up with the same end result. I'm doing everything by the book so to say, and even tho the install goes just fine I can't seem to understand why I have this problem.

Please help!

This is a great guide -- and I followed it to the letter. First time, on a Radeon 9700, it worked fine. Then on my brother's slightly newer 9550, I've been having problems. After I'm done, 3D accelleration is still disabled -- this time it says that as long as multihead is present, it cannot enable 3D accelleration. What do I do?
