ATI driver & SUSE 10.0

Hi,
an interesting thing happened. Two weeks ago, I have installed ATI fglrx driver on my comp. That day everything worked as it must work. Next day there was no more fglrx but Mesa driver. I have less than 800frames when running glxgears. This moment i was checking fglrxinfo and what a surprise, I have ATI drivers back and my glxgears are:

bgorjup@linux:~> fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600 Generic
OpenGL version string: 1.3.5395 (X4.3.0-8.18.8)

bgorjup@linux:~> glxgears
8827 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1765.400 FPS
9995 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1999.000 FPS
9996 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1999.200 FPS
9996 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1999.200 FPS
9995 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1999.000 FPS
9996 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1999.200 FPS
9995 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1999.000 FPS
9913 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1982.600 FPS
9931 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1986.200 FPS

What I did was a synaptic update/upgrade checking and there were some files to update. I do not remember now which files were that. The result is as above. Weird isn't it??

If you want a more detailed, and in my opinion better ordered site, which also explains how to get the files a little better, try mine, or just the ATI official "New Installation Instructions."

Well it really is strange. Today, after switching on my com p the same thing happened again. Mesa drivers came back. FGLRX drivers were there in my system. I checked with YAST. So I completely removed and install them again. They are working now.

bgorjup@linux:~> fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600 Generic
OpenGL version string: 1.3.5395 (X4.3.0-8.18.8)

9191 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1838.200 FPS
10125 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2025.000 FPS
10123 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2024.600 FPS
10124 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2024.800 FPS
10122 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2024.400 FPS
10122 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2024.400 FPS

Is there a way how to disable Mesa drivers or how to change this "automatic" changes between both of them??

When it reverted, what did the XOrg.conf look like? Was it the same file?

Was everything else still configured right?

I can think only that maybe something reverted, and you may have to find and delete mesa files... That part though, I am not sure if it is a great idea, or exactly which ones you would need to. Maybe we can take a look at your config, and check the dmesg for instances of it trying to load the ATI or whether it just loaded the mesas right away.

Hi RedShirt,

Thank you for helping me. I am not very familiar with reading the files and making some conclusions from them (I am still noob regarding Linux), but here is a part of my dmesg file( I will check my config now):

agpgart: Setting up Nforce3 AGP.
That should mean you are using an nforce3 chipset motherboard, is that accurate?

You may be using the Kernel's built in agpgart. I wonder if you are using the correct one, for nvidia chipsets(this is based on your chipset, not the graphics card.) From my website(and ATI's instructions.)
Quote:
# To find out which AGP controller your motherboard uses, issue the following command: lspci | grep AGP
# To find a list of AGP related kernel modules installed on your machine, issue the following command and look for a module (*.ko file) that suits your AGP Controller: ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/agp
# Use the modprobe command (as root) to load the module. For example: On a motherboard using a VIA AGP Controller, you would load the via-agp.ko using modprobe as follows (notice that the trailing .ko is omitted): modprobe via-agp. Check the modprobe manpage for more information on loading kernel modules.
# To verify that the AGP module is already loaded, run lsmod as root. With the X server running and the connection established, the usage count of this module must be greater than zero.
After that last line in your dmesg is probably more about fglrx, can we see that too?

dmesg is okay... it was just that one section then. Did you have to reset your AGPGART or was it set as that nvidia nforce3 already? Your dmesg says it loaded another one, so if it is saying it is okay, but is actually loading the nvidia, it means something is really odd.

Try rebooting again(if you can) and seeing if it sticks now. Was it a once happenstance or repeated happening?

No I did nothing to my AGPGART. It seems it was set like this and yes it is being repeated. It is working now but it probably will not tomorrow when i switch on my comp. I have switched my system a few times now and it is still ok You know, I was not checking every day if it is ATI or Mesa. But now I will. I am not a game player so it is of no importance for me, but I would like to know why is this happening and if there is some solution to resolve the problem.

My motherboard is: ASUS K8N-E Deluxe and graphic card HIS Excalibur 9700,

regards

If you would, when/if it reverts again, also double check the settings before you set about fixing it, see if it is the Conf that is losing settings. Perhaps...and this is just a thought, you have an old .conf which is backing up part fo the new, correct one. My bet lies somethig in that kind of realm, or that sax2 is overriding part or all of the ati Xorg.conf.

Hi RedShirt,

This morning when I started my comp ATI drivers are still there. I will check my config files when they revert again.

Thank you for helping me.

regards
