Question Apache access forbidden to user dirs.

Hello.

I have a fresh Suse 10 install, and I'm trying to get Apache to serve pages from the user directory (ie /home/username/public_html). In the past (ie Suse 9.2, etc), this has always worked out of the box, so I don't really know how its set up, but when I type:

http://localhost/~username/index.html

...it gives me a 403 access forbidden error. The log file says "client denied by server configuration".

Pages in the server root, area (ie not in a user dir) are served correctly.

Can anyone me get it working? I've been fiddling with the settings in Yast for ages, and it's beginning to get to me.

Thanks in advance

apache

Log on Super User Mode then:

1. create or put some folders in "/home/user_name/public_html/"
2. use "File Manager - Super User Mode" to edit "/etc/apache2/default-server.conf "
about line 22 you will find "Options ....." make it say "Options FollowSymLinks"
3. use Yast => system => runlevel editor to stop and start apache
4. create SymLinks
4-1. open a Konsole type "su" enter, without the quotes
4-2. enter root password enter
4-3 for each folder type "ln -s /home/user_name/public_html/folder_name /srv/www/htdocs/folder_name"
enter, without the quotes (LN -S but lower case)
