Any software install with YAST kills X server

Hi -- anybody got some explanation / fix for this

I'd just installed Libxine and Kaffeine from Pacman on SUSE 9.3 -- no probs with the packages --but next time I re-boot I just get a grey screen when trying to start the X server.

Restored the system and did any old install --doesn't matter what package it is once I've used YAST once the next re-boot will just show a grey screen at START X command

The message (CTRL Alt Backspace to quit the X server) shows

== Log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log
== Using config file "etc/X11/xorg.conf"

EE Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA X driver not found)

Then a whole slew of could not init font paths etc -- but I think the main problem is the Nvidia driver not being found.

Any ideas. Normally YAST is fine --it's the first time in using SUSE since as far back as rel 8 that I've EVER had any probs with YAST breaking things.

Cheers

Hi!

Do you have a nvidia card actually? If so, did you install the drivers through YaST?. Can you please post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file here too?

I installed the Nvidia driver from the Nvidia site (driver 7676 pkg1)

I'll post the config file when I can get back on to the machine -- probably can logon vis SSH and copy the Xorg.conf file

(system works so long as you don't start X).

Strangely enough the laptop I'm using while I'm typing this (also SUSE 9.3) has had NO probs whatsover --although a different Nvidia card.

Cheers

I'm having a similar problem. I'm trying to install the 7676 driver which all seems to go well...
Code:
# dmesg
NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86_64 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-7676 Fri Jul 29 13:15:16 PDT 2005
It is in the correct directory...
Code:
 /lib/modules/2.6.13.4-linux/kernel/drivers/video/
output from /var/log/messages
Code:
 Nov 9 22:38:10 localhost kernel: ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:05:00.0 disabled
Nov  9 22:38:22 localhost kernel: ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:05:00.0[A] -> Link [APC3] -> GSI 18 (level, low) -> IRQ 66
Nov 9 22:38:22 localhost kernel: NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86_64 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-7676 Fri Jul 29 13:15:16 PDT 2005
However, in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Code:
(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA X driver not found)
I notice that the ModulePath is set to /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules rather than what I would expect which is /lib/modules/2.6.13.4-linux/kernel/ but I'm not really sure what this is refering to.

the only other line of suspect I can find is from dmesg
Code:
nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.
So where is the GLX extension for the module? Shouldn't it be part of the install? I did set the install script to include the openGL libraries. So now I'm lost. Please help.
