a lot of questions from newbie
 

hi guys.... i have a lot of questions to ask
i recently install opensuse 11 on my new PC (athlon64) dual-boot with winXP, after more than a year i don't use linux at all.
previously i install suse 10.1 on my old PC (athlonXP)which ended tragically because of hardware problem. but the different is, everything was going well on suse 10.1 i have no problem in installing and compilling stuffs from the source. i can play video files, play DVD, etc. i have no problem at all.

but when i install opensuse 11, i found these problems
1. i found that the equalizer is not active in amarok and it only have one engine, the gstreamer engine.
2. i still can install programs, themes, windows decorations from source.
it says tha i have a problem with the "X". what is this X anyway?
3. i've download the codecs to play videos and stuff and put it in the right directory like "/usr/local/lib/codecs" and "usr/lib/win32" but i still can play any video.

i hope you guys can give some solution for my problems

Perhaps you can still use gstreamer and just choose to use the ALSA plugin:

Many people seem to have trouble with amarok and the gstreamer engine and switched to xine:

I would think that you should avoid installing packages from source if possible and instead use the package manager YAST

I recomend you download VLC media player from the Pacman repo Go into Yast and search for VLC and if you enabled the repo it should be there to install. that way you can open any files without any problems :)

You probably don't know what is 'repo' that guys are talking about, so:

It's software repository where you can get stuff you need to install.

To enable community repositories navigate:
Yast -> Software -> Community repositories

Add Packman for example and finish.

Then navigate:
Yast -> Software -> Software Management

There you can find (filter) for VLC for example and select it and then finish.

o guys, i only have 1 installation DVD, and i can find tha packman, only and other stuffs. since i'm connected to the internet so i cant gat the repositories from the website. what can i do now? should i download the rpms one by one?

I am not sure if you mean you are connected to the internet or are not connected to the internet. If you are connected to the internet, you can use YAST and configure it to use more repositories, such as the packman repository. If you are not connected to the internet, how would you download the rpms?

Go to Restricted Formats and choose the automatisized installer for the most common and stable repositories and for media players.

Go here http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ and choose openSUSE and you will get a similar easy ride through to vlc

Amarok with xine is possible if you use YAST to uninstall lib-xine and open the configuration to switch the engine to xine.

Thereafter you can open YAST and check your Software Repositories just to see what they look like.

It is possible to play video and audio files using amarok and kaffeine. What you need to do is:

1. Install win32codec and mplayer packages from the pacman repo.
2. Update the xine and amarok package (as noted by thorkelljarl)
3. To play audio in amarok change engine to xine

To play dvds in kaffeine and other applications (other than vlc) you will need the libdvdcss library from videolan. I think you can get it from the repos but here is a link: http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/1.2.9/rpm/

What is good about vlc is that it is an all in one solution for both audio and video, but installing win32codecs, mplayer, xine are integrated and will allow you to use other multimedia applications that rely on them.
