9.3 - i586 FASTER THAN x86_64 - Why ??

I initially installed the i586 SuSE 9.3 version on my AMD 64 3000+. As per a number of comments, I noticed an improved performance with version 9.3.

HOWEVER .... a week later, I reformatted and installed 9.3 x86_64 and expected the 64 bit optimized system would perform even faster. Unfortuantely the x86_64 version was slower then the i586 version.

Why would this happen and how could I improve the performance?

64 bit processors, until such a time as a lot of the underlying programs use that type of structure will always perform slower. 64 bit is really for computers that need massive amount of RAM and very large databases.

Eventually things will come to par, but it'll take a while.
