Hi all,

I'm considering set up a VM and possibly a machine with Solaris 11 on my own with the wistful memory of Sun Microsystems and OpenSolaris in mind:cry:. Are updates provided for free for non-corporate hobbyist users?

Also, I'm not sure Oracle's EULA allows for personal, non commercial use, please see here, here and here, although I'm not sure which license would apply to your version, if either of them.

What are your thoughts concerning OpenIndiana, would that be a possible alternative?

OpenIndiana is a possibility, although it seems to be an undermanned and somewhat unstable project, although it seemse Oracle doesn't want to do much with Solaris either. I presume that using Solaris without updates would probably be risky - although how bad would it be if I manually updated Firefox - would it be too bad then?

I just miss 2008 when GNOME was light and Solaris was free....

I would first contact Oracle and see if you can even legally use it. I don't know how much a support plan costs but if it's not too much, perhaps that could be an option. If you can use Solaris, I would think an updated version of Firefox might help a little but it certainly wouldn't cover all your bases. ;)

Although pretty old and some of it wouldn't apply, perhaps some of the suggestions here might be of help.

BTW, my first ancestor In America (on my great grandmothers's side of the family) settled in Calvert County, Maryland, southeast of you, back in the 1600's. I've been able to see parts of your state but didn't get down to that area. :)

I'm not going that far out of the way with those semantics with Oracle - they provide Solaris with a free download without registration, so I don't see it being illegal or at least noticeably illegal. If it doesn't update, I actually think I have an Illumnos vm sitting somewhere on my machine from like last month.

I was actually down in Calvert County recently for the first time, it's a chill area that's flat, rural, and slower than the rest of the Western Shore. The part I live in about 2 hours away is the hilly hinterlands by the PA border where sometimes you'll be driving and see mountains that are 15-20 miles away. Maryland is pretty and quite diverse for its size. After my first American ancestors who would've come via the Bering Strait, it's interesting to read about how my English side got established in New Jersey in the 1600's and the towns and churches they've founded. :)

Absolutely! I see your family goes back quite a ways here, too. :)
