It ran Solaris 8 with no problems, I see why it wouldn't run with 9 installed or upgraded.

Yes, the Ultra 5 will run Solaris 9. Try and max out the system's RAM before trying, you'll be happier.

The good old Ultra 5. I have to admit, this might be my favorite Sparc. IDE and VGA out. Good stuff. Mine's a 333 with 512Mb. Beats the hell out of my old SparcIPX.

did it work ok in the end then? i'm running Solaris 9 12/02 on my Ultra 1 (1x167MHz SPARC, 192MB RAM, 18GB HDD) and it works perfectly! pretty quick too, to be honest, and i'm even running Gnome 2.0 on there.

Solaris 9 works like a champ. A Sparc20 will run Solaris 9 without to many issues, so long as you have enough RAM.

Any Sparc in the Ultra series is perfect for 9.
