Solaris Linux Windows partition confuse
 

Dear All

I tried to follow the instruction in this link:

I created all these partitions as mentioned in the link above by using partition commander 9

Fist stage:

I installed XP in first partition (hda1)....success.

Second stage:

Install Mandrake 10.1

I made the second primary partition as /boot not root (hda2).

my / (root not boot ) is had5 within Extended primary.

When I tried to install Mandrake (10.1) using LILO bootloader it gave me this option:

where do you want to install the bootloader?

1- First sector of drive (MBR)
2- First sector of the root partition
3- On floppy
4- Skip


A- When I chose first option it was fine , I could see GUI of LILO with dual OSs. By the way when I checked the list of all configurations before I continoued with the process of installation , it said that your bootloader on /dev/hda,,,why didn't it say on /dev/hda1 (It did not specify ,only general)?

B- When I chose second option, I could not see any thing, although boot (hda2)was active, when I tried to activate, / (root or hda5) , I have seen characters L9 repeatedly filling the screen. (I have to choose this option if I want to follow the URL above). Here it did say that my bootloader on /dev/hda5 (It did specify rather than general),,,why?

My query:
1-Why I can not see option : Fisr sector of boot partition instead of root? As you know that bootloader should in the /boot section if it is separated from the root,,,which is my case? Am I right?

It doesn't look Solaris is involved (yet) in your settings, you should ask your question to Linux (lilo) oriented forums.

Because this is a complete process it is not only Linux nor solaris,,,the URL that I mentioned it is from Solaris side not linux.

Your're right, The URL is talking about Solaris, but you are not yet, as far as I understand, in a step involving Solaris, the reason why I suggest you to turn to Linux and specifically Lilo specialists.

If you want a Solaris answer: why are you trying to use lilo while the Solaris boot loader is itself able to boot Windows XP, Linux (with Lilo or Grub on its partition) and obviously Solaris too ?

I successed to install windows and Linux, now I am installing solaris, I get to point for installation, it was asking me to :

Pointing Device: Unknown

I tried to change the configuration of mouse which is Dell, and I chose this option :

Built-in PS/2 3 buttons, and after I pressed F2


I get screen with blue upper part, and green lower part .

in the buttom screen (green color) there were words seperated all around......I do not know what is the exact error message in order to mention it,,,I am just decriping.

I tried to repeat the process many time on different computers with PS/2 mouse , I was ending with the same problem.

I successed to install on one PC with USB mouse (not PS/2). Do you thing the problem with this,,,,,I guess It should not be!!!!

All the PCs are IBM P4 IntelliStation E Pro (Latest PC)

The bootloader of Solaris (intell V10) has been installed successfully, when I tried to chosse linux only (window no problem), it gave me this error message:

Bad PBR sig.

When I chose (number 3) it starts booting till it reaches to :

Media:

1- CD/DVD

2- Network File System.

3- Skip

By the way is there any procedure I can take screenshot for any problem during installation in order to send to post it here?

Before the pointer issue, you first need to fix that: it seems that the graphic card setting is wrong, try choosing generic VGA or sth similar if you do not find your h/w in the list.
Meaning I think "bad primary boot record signature", if it can help ...
There's no way to store a screenshot programatically when you are in the booting process (unless you boot on a vmware instance), so a digital camera is the only way I think of ...
As to post images on the forum, I don't think it's supported so you only have to option to put it somewhere on a web server visible from the Internet, and put a link here.

Yes I agree with you , but I did not mention this for 3 reasons:


1-Because there was no complain from Solaris about VGA.

2- I installed Solaris on of these PC ,and there was no problem!!!!

3- Long time ago, I had my PC which it had VGA not compatiable with Solaris 7 , Solaris had
complained about VGA, and it showed that type of screen, if I did not change the VGA.

I will try to change the VGA and I will let you know

I checked the VGA card through winodws OS and it is:

NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro,,,,as you know this is the popular VGA card.

any way,,I went through solaris 10 installation again, and it showed me through one of its blue screen which is called : "Current or Proposed Window System Configuration" this message:

from the message above, Solaris recognize VGA (our guess in previous reply was not correct).

and from the message above Solaris complain from Pointing Device,,how can I solve this issue.

By the way Mouse that I have, it is PS/2 with 2 buttoms and wheel,,,what should I chosse ,if I want to choose the correct one?, because I have many options in Solaris like :

2 Button+100ms 3 Button Emulation and many others

What exact version of solaris are you trying to install ?

I would suggest in any case that you first install Solaris in text mode, then only after the installation is complete, try to fix the graphic configuration issue, that may involve downloading unbundled drivers.

Do you still believe it is graphic issue, not mouse issue? If so what should I do with Pointing Devic.

The reason for this coclusion is that Why I was able to install Solaris 10 on the same PC with same VGA, but with different mouse (USB 2 buttoms and wheel)?
