Solaris Certification
Hi all, I want to get my Solaris certification, what books out there can guide me through the certification. I need the book to also prep me on passing the certification. Thanks a bunch

"Solaris Administrator Certification" by Bill Calkins...its good book.
and best try out practically. |
SOLARIS System Administrator's Guide 3rd edition published for SunMicrosystems and Solaris , Janic Winsor.
this is what was given to me when i took the course. |
i'm learning Solaris 9 SysAdmin I and II at the moment as well, but i'm going through the Sun web-based course material. not sure of the URL though, as i'm using an internal version i think.

I used the CBT's from Sun to finish my SysAdmin and NetAdmin. For Solaris 9. Though in hindsight I don't think that the training material that I got was all that great. I felt that they were not very well put together. Considering that each CD was $1000 Canadian.
I would instead recommend that you take a look at docs.sun.com in detail for the version of Solaris that you are trying to certify on. (This site is by far the best that I have found) When I say in detail, I mean read through absolutely all the documentation particularly paying attention to the commands section. The SolariAdmin tests 1 & 2 are going to test you very heavily on commands & there options, file system structure & and hardware as well (i.e. inodes & hardlinks) Note: you will also be tested on your knowledge of the OpenBoot prompt as well. So having access to an older SPARCstation would be an asset. I did my training on an ultra 1 with 200mbs of ram. But you should be able to use either a sparc 4,5,10 or 20 as long as you have enough ram. If for some reason you are not able to get your hands on a Sparc an x86 PC will do for the OS part but again you will need to memorize and understand the openboot prompt commands Hope this helps you :) |
thanks for the advice... luckily, i'm currently working here at Sun anyway, so i have access to all kinds of equipment, and help if i'm stuck :D i also have an Ultra 1 at home, and many of them in our lab here.
i've just ordered the exam certificates at £100 each, so i'll let y'all know when i pass!! :D |

i'm actually on my intern year for my university degree in Computer Science :D i'm working in a team who's job it is to keep many of Sun's web sites alive, such as SunStore, the Online Support Center, and many other internal and external-facing apps also. Soon to be http://www.sun.com too :D very interesting internship! i've been here 12 months now, and i'm due to finish in August, to go back to uni for my final year :D
