Question about "pkg image-update" in OpenSolaris

Hi,

Yesterday, for the first time, I ran "pkg image-update." I was told that there were 566 packages on my system and that I had to download 1883.79 MB in all.

So I let it run, and everything completed after a while.

When I rebooted, I saw that OpenSolaris' Grub had four entries instead of one: the original one, and entries labelled "opensolaris 1," "opensolaris 2" and "opensolaris 3." But only the first one is bootable; none of the other entries can be booted.

Just for a lark I decided to run the same "pkg image-update" command once again today. And here is the output to the terminal:
Code:
roy@opensolaris:~$ su -
Password:
Sun Microsystems Inc.	SunOS 5.11	snv_86	January 2008
-bash-3.2# pkg image-update
DOWNLOAD PKGS FILES XFER (MB)
SUNWgrub 222/566 7052/19505 460.52/1883.79
This is very strange! Exactly the same amount of download as yesterday! How can that be?

Something must be going on? Can someone please tell me why I would have nearly two GB of download each time I try to update my system?

Thanks in advance for your help.

This is the real problem. I guess you failed to follow the specific procedures required for image-update to work.

It is actually very normal. You are still booting the previous release so it needs the same amount of packages to be updated. ZFS allows to have the same filesystem cloned at different periods of time.

Hi jlliagre,

Thanks a lot! I have run those two pfexec commands, and now I am booted into Build 91.

The thing is that I used opensolaris-4 in the pfexec commands. I still have opensolaris-1, opensolaris-2 and opensolaris-3 lying around in my system. Can you please tell me how to remove them safely?

Thanks again for all your help.
