Not as much of a Solaris problem rether hardware Ultra 10 problem (video card)
 

Hi everybody, first post in Solaris forum and it starts with the problem. I've acquired a new full-time position that requires me to have some UNIX administration, I feel like a fish in the water with *NIX's software side, but what puzzles me is the hardware aspects of SPARC. I was given an Ultra10 with 333 MHz (woohooo) processor which has an on-board video as well as a plugable video device, the problem devides now in to two:
1) I want to use a peripheral video card, but the monitor doesn't even react if I plug it into its output. If I plugin monitor into the on-board video out everything was (I am saying was b/c see #2) fine.
2) After playing with PROM ok prompt, and messing with environment I somehow disabled on-board and never got around of enabling the peripheral card. The steps I've taken:

show-displays
it showed /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/SUNW,m64B@2 as the only choice so I assigned it to mydev alias and nothing changed still no video signal from the graphics card, so I went ahead and changed use-nvramrc? from false to true and I kicked off the power cord (dumbass), now there is no video signal from either video device, the onboard circutry device makes the monitor lights (two of them) one amber and one green but no picture or anything. If I connect the monitor to the graphics card (not the onboard one) the only light is amber and no picture.
Can you help me to sort it out? Or is there a way to switch to default environment and start from scratch?

If the system boots, and you can remotely connect to it, then you can use the "eeprom" command from within solaris to make changes to anything in OpenBoot. Check out the manpage for options and what not.

The problem is there is no Operating System yet on the system, I feel like a real dumbass and I'll be running tomorrow with serial terminal to get to boot and fix what little mess I left, oh well another day at job - new job for me.
Thanks for the tip, it'll sure come handy some time soon.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot about the serial term. That would work as well, just don't forget to disconnect the keyboard in order to send input/output to ttya.

No self-respecting system would have a GUI console in a datacenter anyway. Good luck!

Glad you liked it, As for my problem it is resolved what I had to do was hit Stop-n while the system performed diagnostics, and hten I just made sure the graphics card was properly in place (apparently it wasn't) and now I got my Ultra10 running.

I totally forgot about the Stop-n, that sets the openboot back to defaults right? I have been away from Sun hardware for the last year, aside from my own Ultra-5, but I rarely boot that up.

As to that website, I was rolling after the first page or 2 when he likens the computer industry to car dealerships. After that he lost me in rambling boredom about teletypes and paper-tape. That's a long page.
