Mounting an XFS partition (from an USB removable drive)
 

Hi.

I've got some external USB drives which I use in some linux installation I have at home and at work. Now, I would like to mount these partitions with Solaris 10 (11/06): is it possible? have you got some software to suggest?

In more general terms: should you share an USB drive between some solaris and some linux installations, which kind of partition would you choose?

Plase note that I'm not going to mount the drive in linux and accessing it in Solaris through NFS.

As far as I know, an XFS driver was never ported/developed to Solaris.

I you really want to do it, perhaps the simpler way would be to run a small Linux disto virtualized under Solaris (qemu/xen) but it seems you last requirement would forbid that kind of hack ...

I supposed it didn't: googling gave no result and old posts on SGI forums indicated that a Solaris port didn't and was not going to exist... I hoped things had changed since 2003! :)

I'll have to switch FS type from XFS to something else. Did you have any suggestion? Do you know how good is UFS support under linux?

If you want read/write support, I'm afraid the only really supported answer is FAT, which is quite limited in features.

I'm not confident enough to write a file in an ufs filesystem under Linux.

You may want to experiment the bleeding edge and use ZFS under FUSE on your USB drive ...

FAT doesn't look like an... alternative! :D I'll think about it, it seems as NFS is the way to go. I'll check if I can found a way for those networks to see each other.
