Man pages

Hi there,

I just installed gzip, wget, and bash on solaris 8 x86. However, doing a 'man' on each of them reports "No manual entry for <application>". How I installed them were:

1. went to sunfreeware.com and downloaded the packages
2. pkgadd -d <package>

The packages were installed successfully and I can use them but no man pages present. Is it like this with solaris or do I need to do something else to have man pages present for packages? Thanks!

the path to the man pages should be in an environment variable

but just out of curiosity what does

man -K wget

say? ... anyways.. they where probably not installed into the man path.. so go search where the program was installed for the man pages (if any where installed) and move them into the man path

Hi,

'man -K wget' doesn't work but 'man -k wget' does and it shows:
bash-2.05b# man -k wget
/usr/man/windex: No such file or directory
/usr/local/man/windex: No such file or directory
/usr/man/windex: No such file or directory
/usr/local/man/windex: No such file or directory
/usr/local/doc/windex: No such file or directory
/usr/man/windex: No such file or directory
/usr/local/man/windex: No such file or directory

What does all that mean?

However, I did export MANPATH=/usr/man:/usr/local/man and then the man pages worked! Thanks!

all those errors probably mean the were in the man path (probably the only ones), but they don't exist

All these errors means actually that the windex database wasn't created in each man page directory, which is Solaris default..
This is avoiding man -k, whatis and apropos commands to succeed.
See catman(1M) to see how to build the database.

I just did catman -w to build the database. Thanks guys!! Much help appreciated!!
