Is your gaim core dumping?
 

Since my new house was connected to the net 4 days ago, I started using Gaim in my Solaris Express Dev. Ed. 5/07. The problem is that gaim appears... slow, "choking", and core dumps very often. The system is a vanilla installation.

Has anybody experienced problems with this version of gaim?

Gaim is now known as Pidgin: http://www.pidgin.im/. Give that a try instead.

I had this problem under Solaris 10, although I can't remember which exact release it was. It would have been around July time last year, and every time I ran gaim it would core dump without fail.

I never managed to fix it at the time - I did look at compiling the latest revision from source, but there were a lot of dependencies. I also considered installing from http://www.blastwave.org/, but didn't, again due to the number of dependant packages required.

If you're happy using the command line, you could look at CenterIM which has replaced CenterICQ. I've not used CenterIM, but I use CenterICQ on NetBSD/alpha and it's fairly good. The list of requirements for compiling is a lot less than Gaim's was.

However, now it has become Pidgin, there's also a CLI client, called finch I think. You could give compiling that a try - again it'll require a lot less other software to compile.

Resolving dependencies was what I was afraid of, because I'm lacking spare time.

By the way, yesterday it was released the new version of Solaris Express Developer Edition which ships with an updated version of pidgin.

Should I have problems with it or sufficient time to experiment I'll try CenterIM: I'm really happy with the command line! ;)
