kdmconfig to select and configure the server, possibly /usr/X11/bin/xorgconfig if you use Xorg (vs Xsun).
Then you can start X11 manually with xinit or automatically with "dtconfig -e"
This is precisely all what X11 is about, a grey screen and a pointer.
You are missing a graphic environment/clients.
Try: dtconfig -reset
Log out and what for a while for dtlogin to start the graphic login window.
