how to setup a secondary interface

I want to assign a new ip to my secondary interface I wonder how to do it,
can someone help me on this ?

echo new-ip > /etc/hostname.secondary-interface
ifconfig secondary-interface plumb
ifconfig secondary-interface new-ip
ifconfig secondary-interface up
