Here goes... installing Solaris for the first time.

I am about to install Solaris on a Sun server for the first time. I have no experience with sun machines, so this is all new to me. I will be installing it through the console using hyper terminal on my Windows XP install on my laptop. If anybody has any pointers, feel free to post them here...

Relevant details.

Installing Solaris 9
Installing onto Sun server
I have no keyboard, mouse, or monitor for the server
I will be using a laptop and consol cable to install
Using Hyper Terminal in WindowsXP Pro.

Let the fun begin....

Hope all is well and you got Solaris installed.. post back if you were successful or not, how you did it, etc? Could benefit the next member attempting the same thing.

Cheers.

The biggest hurdle is to get the sysconfig file set up right prior to installing, and then the system will read it and grab its host name and networking configuration, along with the other pertinent boot info when you load. Also, remember if you get stuck, you can boot from the CD or in single user mode to fix the problem and then resume the install or operation

There should not be any problem with the actual installing-process.

As soon as you have installed Solaris 9, I suggest to make a Flash-Archive of the installation.
This will save you much time in case the system will be messed up due to config mistakes.

That's one of the more popular ways to install, just make sure your terminal window is set to 9600-N-8-1, and choose the terminal type you are using when asked by the Solaris installation. I use VT100 myself, but any common type should be there. Also, I skip the installation CD and go right to Software #1, especially when using a terminal to install.

Ok, here is an update....

I broke down and bought a sun mouse/keyboard. So now I can do things the right way without using a laptop and hyperterminal!

I stick disc 1 of the Solaris 9 install CDs into the CD-ROM drive and boot up the server, but for some reason it doesnt boot from the CD-ROM. Do I need to TELL it to boot from the CD-ROM somehow?

Searching through other forums and through google I have read that I need to do something like "stop+a" and then type "cdrom". Well I do that and then it just says:

cdrom?
ok

and it sits there waiting for more input from me. So I figure "ok, I have it set to cdrom, now i will tell it to go" so I type "go" and press return. Then it just starts booting from the HD again.

I am really new to Sun machines if you couldnt tell.

I am trying to install Solaris9 on a ULTRASparc-IIi (333Mhz, 265M). How do I get the process rolling? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks to everyone who has already replied too!

Joe

EDIT: I just the the STOp+A again, and this time typed "boot cdrom" and it worked. So it looks like I am passed that hurdle..... on to the next... bring it on!

try this...

ok, if you have a sun keyboard and mouse, this will make life a little easier, but still, the basic premis is to boot from the cdrom.

Use stop-A only if you need to do an emergency shut down, or don't care about what is on the drive....otherwise, do a init 0 or shutdown -h now or type sync enter sync enter sync enter halt enter...these are the prefered methods.

A slightly different way is to start the machine, and before it completes the memory check (the spinning bar) type stop-A. Then type boot cdrom - install and this will start the installation process for you...

hope this helps

good info to know. The sun machine is in the process of booting form the CD-ROM as I type this... (man its slow...)

Ok... now I am at a "Select a Language" prompt. Looks like I am making progress. We'll see how it goes from here. I think I am on the right track now.
