GNU utilities

I want to install the companion software CD which consists
of the GNU utilities. Should I make a new filesystem to
hold these utilities before I install them.

The default solaris installation is divided into three
filesystems: /, /usr/, and /export.

How do I create a /var filesystem to hold all
the variable system logs etc...

How do I create a /opt/sfw filesystem to hold all the GNU
utilities from the companion CD.

Do I do a normal installation of solaris, and then create the filesystems with newfs or mkfs? or do I create these filesystems during the installation somehow.

At this point all I have been able to do is create the /var directory as a subdirectory of the root slice, and the /opt/sfw directory as a subdirectory of the root slice as well. This fills up the root slice and causes problems.

Thanks in advance,

If you did not create a separate /var or /opt slice, then they will be included in the / slice since that is their parent directory.

Since you are just beginning with Solaris, I don't recommend trying to resize the slices. It would be much easier to re-install. Use the "customise" option when you get to the disk layout step. If you do happen to have an unused disk to slice up, you can format the disk and then newfs the slices.
