doubt regarding GRUB and /boot

Hi,
When I installed Open Solaris (X86 platform) i created a separate /boot partition.
When I booted the system I was left at grub> prompt . I loaded the kernel and modules manually and booted here.

After booting I noticed that all the required boot files were in the /boot partition whereas the /boot folder in the / partition was empty. So I copied all the files in the /boot partition to /boot folder in / partition and grub started working properly ....Open Solaris now booted automatically.

Why did this happen? Does grub in Open Solaris doesn't read from a separate /boot partition ( It does so in Linux!!) ?
Any details related to this will be very helpful .

Regards,
Vineet

You actually created a slice, in Solaris terminology.

It doesn't, at least by default. You could have told grub to pick its configuration on your custom /boot slice however I never tested such a configuration. Partitions and slices are a limited resource not to waste them.

It doesn't do that necessarily under Gnu/Linux. It is an implementation choice.
