dd command and /dev/fd0 problem

Hello all,

Here is the history...

Like a dummy I tried installing Mandrake 9.2 on my Dell Poweredge server and it fried my HL Data Storage GCR-8481X CD-ROM. I read about this issue after the fact. Sigh. I went and grabbed the firmware reflash file on Dell's site and as it turns out, that file doesn't work on Poweredges - just Optiplex and another type of desktop PC so I decided to install it over our network.

I copied my Mandrake installation CD over to my Sparc 100 and grabbed the network.img and did the following in a terminal session:

*inserted floppy*
volcheck
*cd to images dir*
dd if=network.img of=/dev/fd0

and received an error stating that the device was busy. So I typed in /etc/rc2.d/S92volmgt stop and it said file not found. I looked in rc2.d and holding true to my luck recently it mostly went innumerical order but jumped from S91 to S93. I also looked in rc0.d through rc4.d. Nothing at all for rc5 or 6.

Backing up, I unmounted the floppy drive as soon as I saw the device busy error but that didn't change anything (was in /floppy - seems strange but this is actually the first time I've ever used the thing -- expected it to be in /mnt ) and that is where I left off. Any help on this issue will be greatly appreciated. If I need to post more info please let me know and I will do so when I go back to work tomorrow. (Please excuse delays in getting back to posts - 14hr time diff here between Japan and the East Coast) Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Tammy

P.S.

I've been dealing w/a comedy of errors and There is actually another part to this story but I will place that question in the Mandrake forum in the thread dealing w/the Mandrake 9.2 and fried CD-ROMs.

dd works on an unmounted device. Are you using automount? If so you and automount may be in disagreement on the status of /dev/fd0.

Lightbulb figured it out...

dd if=network.img of=/vol/dev/aliases/floppy0

**NOT** dd if=network.img of=/dev/fd0

/vol/dev/aliases/floppy0 is an alias for /vol/dev/rdiskette0. /dev/fd0 and /dev/rfd0 should also work. They are left in for ucb compatibility. Make sure that vold is not running. It will interfer with floppy devices.
