Couple of questions

Hello,

I'm new to this community, so I hope that you don't flame me if my questions are not up to the standards.

First question:

I was trying to install the gcc compilers yesterday, and it defaulted to /opt directory. Can I specify different directory than the default one when using pkgadd command?

Second question:

I installed solaris 9 on my x86 machine, and I would like to enable the mouse wheel scroll functionality, how do I do that?

Thanks for you help,

Fido

1) why don't you like the compiler to be installed in /opt/sfw or perhaps /opt/csw ?

2) You'll find mousewhell drivers (PS2 and USB) in

http://www.tools.de/solaris/ps2wheel/
http://bolthole.com/solaris/drivers/usb-usbsm.html

as for gcc I prefer (it is only my preference) to use GNU version that's installed under /usr/local to get it use http://sunfreeware.com mirrors

Installing unbundled software in /usr/local is violating to the SVR4/Solaris standard.

From the Solaris documentation: (man filesystem)

Quote:
/usr/local
Not part of the SVR4-based Solaris distribution. The
/usr directory is exclusively for software bundled
with the Solaris operating system. If needed for stor-
ing machine-local add-on software, create the direc-
tory /opt/local and make /usr/local a symbolic link to
/opt/local. The /opt directory or filesystem is for
storing add-on software to the system.
I prefer blastwave.org who is installing everything under /opt/csw
With that approach, there is no risk of conflict with different origin versions of the same s/w.

Btw, the place a command is installed in doesn't make a difference as long as it is in your PATH ...
