changes to actual system after creation of new boot environment

I am not very familiar with all consequences of the Solaris update mechanisms, so here I have a question about this. Especially what happens after having downloaded all packages, and the new boot environment has been created.

Sometimes I have to wait a couple of days to activate the new boot environment by doing a reboot.
Therefore my question is "What happens to changes in config files I have made in the active boot environment, after the new boot environment is created"?
Will these changes be taken to the new boot environment after reboot, or should you freeze all change activity till the new boot environment is active?

System: Solaris 11.1

A new boot environment is based on ZFS snapshots which are read-only datasets. Everything done after it was created
is not stored in it.
